SCHOOL PROFILE

Beaconsfield Middle School is located in the Fundy Heights area of West Saint John, N.B. The school offers a middle school English and Early French Immersion curriculum to a student population of 260 students in grades 6 through 8. School organization is by team for each grade level. Each team is housed in its own area within the building.

We are a community school serving students from lower Sand Cove Road and Fundy Heights area on one end, to the students who live in lower West Side as far as River View at the other end of the school zone.

The majority of students are within walking distance to the school, however, students from the end of Sand Cove Road are bussed and a complimentary bus has been designed to service the transportation needs for those students in the lower West Side area.

Each classroom is internet accessible with computers in each classroom. A staff of 15 teachers meet the educational needs of students. The special needs population is fully integrated and a full time Methods and Resource teacher assist regular classroom teachers adapt curriculum to the needs of each student. In addition to the teaching staff, there are two full time custodians and a full time secretary. The school also engages the support of a large contingent of parent, business and community volunteers for associated programs.

The staff is firmly committed to providing a quality education for all students. This means maintaining a positive learning environment, with a variety of educational opportunities, which will encourage all students to reach their optimum potential.

COMMUNITY USE & PARTNERSHIPS

The school is well used by the west side community. Youth groups and sport programs use it most evenings during the week and on weekends. Over the last few years there has been an effort to harbor some solid partnerships between the community and the school. Examples of this are:

-Student volunteer with neighbouring schools and nursing home

-Breakfast For Learning subsidy for school breakfast program

-Partnership with Greco Pizza, M&J Convenience for school Hot Lunch program

-Partnership with Carleton Community Center

-Junior Achievers program

-Healthy Eating program with Sobeys Ltd.

-Partnership with Carleton Curling Club

-Saint John Police - Community Policing Division

-Saint John Fire Department-School Safety and the "Pat On The Back" program

-Partnership with local businesses via the "Pat On The Back" program

-Active supporter of various charities such as Romero House, United Way, West Side Food Bank, Salvation Army, Christmas Box Campaign and Cherry Brook Zoo
